Oregano

The scientific name is Oreganum Vulgare.

In Greece, the most widespread variety is Hirtum.

It is a native shrub in Mediterranean and Central Asia.

Oregano is collected between June – July, before and during the first stages of flowering, when the plant contains the largest amount of essential oil.

The content of essential oil ranges from 3-5% and in exceptional cases can reach 7%.

The main substances contained in the essential oil are carvacrol and thymol which are attributed to the strong biological action of oregano.

It has antioxidant properties

The main components of oregano, carvacrol and thymol, can help inhibit the growth of many fungi and bacteria.

Could decrease inflammation, in the same way as antibiotics such as penicillin, streptomycin and vancouvacine.

The essential oil inhibits the growth of yeast, some of which are responsible for oral infections and vaginitis

Its antioxidant action slows down aging due to the protection of cells. In 20gr. Oregano contained 10mg. Vitamin C, 3.6mg. Vitamin E, protects the gums, teeth and red blood cells.

Uses

In culinary it goes well with fish, poultry, meat, cheese and eggs and gives a unique taste to pizza, pasta and chips.

As infusion, is used for sore throat, nausea and cough

Due to its potential diuretic properties, oregano has also been used to ease bloating and edema.
